Bayern Munich smashes RB Leipzig 4-1

Bayern Munich ran riot on RB Leipzig with a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Robert Lewandowski, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were on the score-sheet for the defending champions as they beat their closest title challengers of last season.

It was a familiar but hostile reception for the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Marcel Sabitzer and Bayern manager, Julian Naggelsmann who all returned to the Red Bull Arena for the first time as Bayern contingents.

Bayern started Dayot Upamecano and brought on former Leipzig captain, Marcel Sabitzer later on in the match to make his debut for the Bavarians.

The defending champions lost Gnabry to injury before the break, but replacement, Musiala, found his range in next to no time.

And barely 120 seconds into the second period, the English teenager controlled Alphonso Davies’ inch-perfect cross into the box and fired into the bottom corner for 2-0.

Robert Lewandowski twice miscued either side of an Andre Silva goal ruled out by VAR for offside, before Leroy Sane applied a routine finish to Musiala’s smart run and cross.

It appeared that there was a lifeline for the hosts when Laimer thundered past Neuer from 35 yards, but the visitors remained impervious.

And after Gulacsi thwarted Sabitzer late on, substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added a fourth Bayern goal as the holders moved back to within two points of early Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg.

It’s now Leipzig’s third defeat from four games and coach Jessie Marsch’s team have found themselves seven points off second placed Bayern Munich, and nine points off the leaders, Wolfsburg.
