Edu wanted to sign another keeper but Arteta insisted on Ramsdale

Arsenal technical director Edu wanted to buy a different goalkeeper this summer but Mikel Arteta insisted on signing Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners wrapped up a deal for Ramsdale in August with the north London club paying £24m up front with Sheffield United potentially receiving another £6m in performance-related add-ons.

Ramsdale was in brilliant form in the second half of last season for the Blades – despite their relegation from the Premier League – and went on to win the club’s Player of the Year award.

There were doubts among the Arsenal fanbase over Ramsdale’s quality after noticing he had a relegation on his CV from the previous season too at Bournemouth.

The big fee was also surprising considering he is set for a role on the bench most weeks – but that didn’t put off Arteta, who pushed through a deal.

And The Athletic claim that the Ramsdale transfer in particular showed that Arteta ‘ultimately wielded the most influence’ over their summer business.

Arteta’s testimony also ‘convinced the hierarchy to proceed with the deals’ for Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu this summer.

When it came to buying Ramsdale, ‘Edu and his team advocated for cheaper alternatives’ with Sheffield United holding out for a reported £35m-£40m.

Barcelona’s Neto was one of those names but The Athletic added that ‘Arteta’s conviction in Ramsdale is what won out, and the clubs met in the middle. If a collaborative process drew up the list of targets, it seems it was Arteta’s single-mindedness that drove through the deals he most wanted.’

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman sees similarities from when he joined the Gunners and he hopes Ramsdale goes on to prove the doubters wrong.

“There’s a lot of similarities to when I joined Arsenal. I was England’s No.3 at the World Cup in 1990, Ramsdale has done the same,” Seaman told talkSPORT.

“I started getting a load of stick because the fans didn’t want me. They were all singing ‘Lukic is better than Seaman’ and ‘You’ll never play for Arsenal’.

“There are some similarities and hopefully he will go on to have a very good career at Arsenal.

“He’s still learning, you can see that. Will he walk into the team? I don’t think so. I think what he’s got to do is get in training, impress the manager and get the respect of the lads as well.”
