What is Galaxy Squad?
Galaxy Squad is a turn-based tactical roguelike in which you lead a team of mercenaries through randomly generated galaxies with different events.
This game combines node-based exploration and random events, similar games like FTL or Renowned Explorers with hardcore tactical battles that are inspired by XCOM series. Your characters are generated randomly and can be modified to create the ultimate crew.
Galaxy Squad Review
Looking on the steamout of 368 reviews, the game is mostly positive and the complaints tend to be the game is a bit generic and low budget and hard to compete with.
Empyrio on Steam gave the game a positive review
This is a “rogue-like” meaning it doesn’t support multiple saves. Generally I don’t care for games like that but I found that I could manually copy the save game file as often as I wanted and could restore the game from those copies, so I no longer have to worry about having no way back if I make a mistake and ruin a game.
I’ve only played for 7 hours but am enjoying the game so far on my third restart. The 3d graphics are crude, the English grammar and spelling are poor, the quests are simplistic, but I’m enjoying the tactical combat on Normal mode.
Initially you can only play the epic quest mode. In this mode you have to keep moving away from the ever-expanding Federation border which means you won’t be able to reach every quest and may not be able to return to the space station where you got a quest after you complete it.
Therefore if you take the default ship I’d recommend building the Advanced Generator and then the communications device so that you can turn in quests remotely.
On Shooter characters I recommend taking Grenade as your first ability. It’s amazing how far they can be thrown and they do good area of effect damage early on. Grenade launchers make a good second weapon for your Assault class characters especially once they have the Reload costs 1 AP ability. Good luck and enjoy!
- Explore other planets and fight enormous numbers of enemies
- Upgrade your ship, and make use of its systems during events or battles
- Find quests and explore space stations
- A powerful story campaign system that involves your characters and branches to create compelling stories
- You can upgrade your equipment by adding new modifications or finding rare loot
Quote from the Developer
I’d designed a prototype of Galaxy Squad a few years before I actually started seriously working on it, but decided to set it aside for some time. The idea of combining a couple of my favorite game mechanics from different genres was always appealing to me, but there were other ideas I was obsessed with at the time.
Fast forward a couple of years and, after a series of rather unsuccessful games, I was thinking of leaving the game development industry entirely, but decided to give it one last try. I am so glad I did it because Galaxy Squad became my best project at that time, saved my career, and changed my life. – Oleg Kazakov
