High strength 3D printed alloys

3D Systems reports that Scalmalloy and M789 alloys are now available for manufacture on its range of metal 3D printers.

According to the company, the two materials can be used to make high-strength, corrosion-resistant parts for aerospace, motorsports and automotive, semiconductor, energy, and moldmaking applications.

3D Systems says that users can also work with the company’s Application Innovation Group (AIG) to certify the materials for use with its DMP Flex 350 and DMP Factory 350 printers.

Scalmalloy is an aluminum alloy with a tensile strength of 520MPa and yield strength of 480MPa, stronger than the reference material AlSi10Mg. The high strength of Scalmalloy makes it suitable for additively manufacturing weight-efficient, load-bearing components. Parts produced using Scalmalloy are generally chemically cleaned during post-processing to remove surface residue, the company said.

M789 can be used to produce molds and tooling that can be hardened up to 52HRC and are cobalt-free. 3D Systems has attained certification of M789 for its DMP platform through collaboration with its partner, GF Machining Solutions.
