After a year in which the New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears sent the #FreeBritney movement into overdrive, and Britney Spears herself spoke out against the restrictive nature of her conservatorship, Jamie Spears has finally petitioned to have the controversial legal arrangement dropped.
“Ms. Spears has told this court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship,” reads a court filing obtained by CNN. “She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.” Which… yes?
Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart has already released a statement calling the developments on September 7 a “vindication,” with another hearing in the case set for September 29. The pop star made global headlines earlier this summer when—after 13 years of silence on the matter—she addressed a courtroom in Los Angeles, demanding that the “abusive” conservatorship be ended. (Jamie’s lawyers have previously stated that he carried out his duties under the arrangement “diligently and professionally.”) Britney has yet to comment personally, although she did post an Instagram shot of Audrey Hepburn flipping someone off with the telling caption, “If you’re in a bad conversation, sometimes this is the best solution.” Conversation—and, indeed, conservatorship.
