Tackling is a dying art, right? Wrong.
La Liga is packed with players who love a challenge, whether they are operating in the centre of the park, battling away in the heart of defence or leading the front line.
Of course, those who do fly into duels must walk a disciplinary tightrope. However, the risk is often worth the reward as players who wear their hearts on their sleeves are very much appreciated by the fans.
Last season, it was Guido Rodriguez who ruled the roost among the tacklers, as one of four players to hit the 90+ mark, making 97 tackles in total across the campaign, going agonisingly close to the century. The Real Betis midfielder was four ahead of Renato Tapia, with Alfonso Espino completing the top three (92) and Emerson Royal (91) a further one back.
There were then two players in the 80s including Javi Galan whose 88 tackles were combined with 121 take-ons despite being relegated as part of the Huesca side. Casemiro made 84 for Real Madrid, with a gap of eight to Real Sociedad’s Andoni Gorosabel who made 76 tackles.
Marcos Llorente, Nolito and Iza completed the top 10 for tacklers and all will be hoping they can challenge Rodriguez for the crown next season.
