Most tackles: Serie A 2021/22 season standings

“Carlos Tevez told me that Italy is like a university for strikers,” Alvaro Morata once said. Indeed Serie A has cultivated a reputation for being the home of defensive excellence over the years.

In Serie A, a crunching slide tackle is met with as much revelry as a tap-in; a clean sheet celebrated in the same breath as three points; muddy shorts held in the same esteem as a hat-trick ball; Catenaccio — or “door-bolt”, a tactical system pioneered in Italy with an emphasis on defensive discipline — respected over any form of tiki-taka. In Argentina, Lionel Messi is the poster boy. In Italy, it’s Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Last season saw the landscape in Serie A drastically alter as Inter rocked Juventus’ iron throne to seal the Scudetto. But, there were some constants in the top flight across 2020/21, not least in the tackling department, as Serie A’s hard-nosed warriors got stuck in and lived up to their moniker as the “university for strikers”.

AC Milan’s Davide Calabria topped the charts with 101 tackles, the only player in Serie A to clear the triple digit mark, while the likes of Manuel Locatelli and Marten de Roon put in a shift further up the pitch, coming in at second and third respectively. Surprise candidates Adrien Rabiot and Tiemoue Bakayoko also made the top 10.

Premier League fans wouldn’t have been surprised to see Lucas Leiva also rank in the top 10, but will the former Liverpool hatchet man continue to snap at ankles as frequently in 2021/22? You can keep track of the top 10 tacklers below as the Serie A campaign progresses.
