Sound Sultan’s much-awaited posthumous album, Reality Chq, is now accessible on all streaming platforms.
Produced by ID Cabasa, the 5-track EP was near completion before the icon’s untimely death. The album, heralded by the lead single “Friends”, is the first in a series of projects to be executed by Now Muzik in collaboration with Naija Ninja and Sound Sultan Foundation for the Sound Sultan estate.
“This was the album Sound Sultan was working on before he answered the call of the Almighty. This is a very special project. I promised myself this project will come out and people will get to hear the voice of Sound Sultan.” Baba Dee, Sound Sultan’s brother, said about the project’s release.
Reality Chq promises to be an album rich in themes and sounds. Sound Sultan was one of the writers and righters who used his music to communicate issues pertinent to society and man’s relationship with his environment. Reality Chq isn’t any different.
From the preview of songs such as ‘Siren’ (feat. 2Baba), which talks about October 20, 2020, the Lekki tollgate incident and functions as a civic call; ‘Friends’, which is a double-edged reveal about the importance and cons of friends; ‘Reality Cheque’ (feat Bella Shmurda), which jolts the people from their reverie; ‘Naija Na Wa’, which describes the cosmetic nature of social media life in the digital age, Sultan’s preoccupation with intentional lyrics again comes to the fore.
Beyond that, the sounds are alluring, a melting pot of the past and the present, with Fela’s Afrobeat – blaring horns and a psychedelic vibe – appearing to be scaffoldings for and backdrops to Sultan’s usual acoustic soul and modern bounce. What you get is an album that does not only entertain but also speaks truth to power.
The debut of the Reality Chq album also heralds the launch of SKY Bluetooth Bassbuds, an earbud compatible with all smartphone types. It comes with heavy bass and auto-pairing, which is fantastic for making calls & listening to music. This product is one of the many launches and initiatives by the Sound Sultan Eternal (SSE) to keep the icon’s name alive.
Speaking on behalf of the Sound Sultan estate and his management, Now Muzik’s Rhiemen Omorogbe stated, “this is only the beginning, as we will be releasing the SSE fashion collection soon. The creation and production process are firmly on course in collaboration with top Nigerian fashion brand, NACK Apparel.”
Furthermore, according to Baba Dee, record label and entertainment brand Naija Ninja, “will curate the annual Festac Music Festival and this year’s edition will feature a Street basketball tournament in honour of Sound Sultan to be held at his favourite basketball court in Festac town in December.”
