“Disappointing loss yesterday, but I’m heading in the right direction,” she captioned a picture of herself. “Honestly, so much to be proud of! Been fighting battles all year and haven’t backed down yet. Never stop fighting! You win or you learn, but you never lose.”

Her comments were filled with motivational comments. However, the messages she has been receiving are horrific.

On her IG Stories, Sloane revealed she received over 2,000 messages that were filled with hate and abuse due to her losing her match.

“I am human, after last night’s match I got 2K + messages of abuse/anger from people upset by yesterday’s result. It’s so hard to read messages like these, but I’ll post a few so you guys can see what it’s like after a loss…,” she wrote.

Sloane – who is ranked No. 66 among women tennis players – then shared screenshots of some of the foul direct messages and comments she received, which included racist comments.

SICK!

After sharing the screenshots, the 2017 US Open champion came back with another message to everyone who has been sending her good vibes.

“Thank you so much for all of the love and support!,” she wrote. “Your messages are so kind and thoughtful! I’m grateful for my family, friends and fans – I feel so loved, encouraged and uplifted. I hope this conversation continues because …. ‘You never know how long your words will stay in someone’s mind even long after you’ve forgotten you spoke them.'”

On top of losing, this year has been a hard year for the tennis champ. At the beginning of the year, Sloane shared she had lost three family members in the span of a few weeks. Her grandmother and aunt died after battles with COVID-19, and her grandfather died a week later, for reasons she did not disclose.

Sloane gave a rare glimpse into what athletes have to deal with after a loss, backing what other athletes, specifically Black women, have been opening talking about when it comes to the pressure they feel and mental health issues.

After Naomi Osaka‘s exit from the U.S. Open, she said she might take a break from tennis and doesn’t know when she’ll return. She said she no longer feels joy when she wins, just relief. And we can see why.

Hopefully, the transparency will show onlookers just how hard it is, not only dealing with a loss, but also the backlash that comes with it.

Prayers for Sloane!
