They’ll have to miss at least three games

Well, we told you yesterday that the Minnesota Vikings’ 53-man roster was pretty much set in Jell-o when they reached the roster cutdown deadline, and they’ve proven that true today by making a ton of moves. We’ll break them down into a few different categories here, starting with the three players the team placed on injured reserve.

The team has announced that tight end Irv Smith Jr., running back Kene Nwangwu, and wide receiver Dan Chisena have all been placed on IR. Because they were first on the 53-man roster, this can be considered “short term” IR, meaning that they can be brought back to the active roster after three games.

We’ve been over Smith’s situation pretty thoroughly already, so we won’t labor it any further. Nwangwu suffered a knee injury on the opening kickoff of the preseason and did not see the field after that. That was quite the disappointing development, as the Vikings pretty clearly thought pretty highly of him during Training Camp this year and he appeared to be on track to at least compete for the job of primary kick returner. Chisena, according to the Vikings’ website, got “dinged up”. . .technical medical term, I guess. . .when he made a diving catch in practice back on 24 August.

Nwangwu and Chisena should be back in relatively short order, one would think. Nwangwu has been resting for a few weeks already and Chisena’s issue doesn’t sound particularly serious. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on how it all shakes out.
